Passage 1
Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.
America is a society in which children have watched approximately 180,000 television commercials by the time that they have reached their middle teens. My friend Julie learned this fact a few weeks ago and decided to do something about it. She thinks that the number of commercials that children see can influence the way in which they view the world. That is, Julie believes that children, who watch so many ads will grow up to believe that the most important thing in life is to buy, buy, buy! This, says Julie, is wrong. A little child cannot understand advertisements for what they are and so believes totally in what he or she hears.
I have been thinking about what Julie has told me. I suppose that she is right. I know that it is easy to manipulate the minds of children because they don’t see things carefully, as adults do. And I am upset myself at how the advertisers can control a child’s outlook on the world. I think I should join Julie in her efforts to change advertising tactics when it comes to advertisements for children. I really have a responsibility to make sure that future generations are given every chance to develop their minds without the interference of mass media.
Of course, there is another side to the issue. After all, parents ought to take responsibility for what their children watch and how much television they see. I know that many parents just want their children to be quiet, and so they let them watch as much television as they want. But, in the long run, the methods of advertisers have enormous power because we are a society of consumers. I only hope that some day there can be a solution to this problem. Children need our guidance, not the guidance of advertisers.
16. According to Julie, children are likely to be misled by commercials mainly because_ __
A. they are 180,000 commercials produced each year

C. they spend little time on their assignments

A. most advertisers take advantage of children B. most advertisements are illegal and immoral
C. advertisers view the world differently D. advertisements are all misleading
19. The writer seems to think that parents who let their children watch television at will are __ _
A. passive B. sympathetic C. irresponsible D. unkind
20. The major point discussed in the passage is ___ _
A. the ill-effect of television watching on children B. the influence of commercials and the guidance of parents
C. a sound way to keep the children quiet D. the business of television commercials.

Passage 3
Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.
The faces of elderly, happily-married people sometimes resemble each other. Dr. Aiken studied a number of couples who had been married for at least twenty-five years. Each couple provided four photographs—one photo of each partner at the time of their marriage and another photo of each partner twenty-five or more years later. All background was cut from the photos to remove any clues. The photos were then displayed in groups: a random grouping of the persons at the time of their marriage and another random grouping of the same persons who took photographs later. Some judges were asked to pick out the partners. They failed totally with the first group. Their judgments were no better than chance. But with the photos taken twenty-five or more years after the marriage, the judges were quite successful at deciding who was married to whom. They were particularly successful with the most happily-married couples.
Dr. Aiken believes there are several reasons why couples grow alike. One reason has something to do with imitation. One person tends to copy or do the same as someone else without knowing it. He says human beings imitate the expressions of the faces of their loved ones. Another possible reason, he says, is the common experience of the couples. There is tendency for people who have the same life experience to change their faces in similar ways. For example, if a couple suffered from a lot sad experiences, their faces are likely to change in a similar way.
