During that period, the total investment volume from China to Canada was 5 times of that from 1970 to 2003. The key Chinese enterprises, such as PetroChina, Sinopec, China Minmetals, Huawei Group, etc., invested or established their representative offices, or set up their R&D facilities in Canada. I also participated and spoke in various trade shows, such as Tianjin Trade Fair, China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT), etc. In addition, I was responsible for the approval reading of “Invest in Canada” Chinese version (simplified Chinese), Canada’s Competitive Advantages, CANADA - A CLIMATE FOR GROWTH, and other promotion materials. Highlights of responsibilities and accomplishments include the following: Develop a current knowledge of the Chinese market and advice/assistance/respond to the Canadian companies and other government departments (refer to clients): I develop and maintain a current knowledge of the China’s political and economic context. I use this intelligence to respond to requests for information from the Canadian clients, and to provide strategic advice proactively to clients on doing business in China. Based on this knowledge, I conduct researches and synthesize information and draft speeches for delivery by the Program Manager (Minister or Counselor) or Ambassador to local organizations or clients, and provide the interpretation and translation for the Program managers or Ambassador as requested. Build relations with clients: I build and sustain mutually beneficial relationships with clients, assess their potentials in China, provide market intelligence and value-added advice on the opportunities and challenges of doing business in China. Face-to-Face contact locally and advice to clients on local assistance: As the trade commissioner, I research and analyze business needs of local contacts prior to initiating a relationship and proactively engage in outcalls/corporate liaison activities to advise on Canada’s capabilities, and to enlarge the local contact base and promote Canada and its products in my responsible sector(s), as well as to identify the opportunities for investment in Canada. Troubleshooting: I analyze diverse potential and actual business or market access problems encountered by clients, develop and advise them of creative strategies for resolving them.
