As is indicated in the table given here, there was a radical change in college students’ choices of books from 2005 to 2015. The number of the books about foreign languages and computer science went up sharply, accounting for 39% and 30% respectively in 2015, while the books related to novels, philosophy and society became less popular.
Apparently, there are several factors contributing to the change. Due to the increasingly fierce competition in the current job market, college students are saddled with great pressure to find a promising job. Those who are proficient in foreign languages and computer science have a great advantage over other job applicants. That’s why college students spend more time on the books about the two aspects. What’s more, widespread access to the Internet and other media is responsible for the fact that many college students are not willing to read novels and the books about philosophy and society.
From my perspective, books are still an effective channel via which we acquire information and enrich ourselves. I hope college students affix much value to reading the books about philosophy and society in that they help us achieve all-round development by deepening our soul.
Essay 2
Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay based on the picture below. You should focus on the effect of smart phone apps. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.
“Millions of apps that do all kinds of amazing things-but nothing to clean the litter
box by remote control.”
As is depicted in the picture, a woman, swelling with disappointment, complains to her husband that there is nothing to clean the litter box by remote control, which fully demonstrates too much dependence on smart phone apps.
Admittedly, with the radical development of modern technology, apps are doing all kinds of amazing things, bringing tremendous convenience to our daily life. By getting access to apps, we are in a position to communicate with others, purchasing whatever we need and turn on home appliances regardless of the distance. However, overuse of apps undeniably has an adverse influence on us. Depending apps too much to deal with our daily life, we are prone to forget our feet and hands, hampering us from interacting with other people face-to-face. In addition, some apps have the potential of resulting in the malicious use of our personal information.
In light of the discussion above, it is obviously necessary to treat apps in a balanced manner.
We should applaud their conspicuous advantages, while the negative effects should not be turned a blind eye to. Only when they are reasonably utilized will we have an overwhelmingly comfortable life.

It is universally acknowledged that positive attitude plays a vital role in our work and life, as is denoted in the saying “The world is like a mirror; frown at it and it frowns at you; smile and it smiles too.”
It is undeniably common for us to be saddled with repeated setbacks and hardships in our lifetime. Those who keep positive are better equipped to find solutions to any tough problems they encounter. Let’s take the example of Nelson Mandela, a South African politician who won the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. Mandela was firmly committed to pursuing racial equality and human rights. Although trapped in prison for 27 years, he didn’t give up on his political ideology. It was the extraordinary positive attitude that contributed to his success.
To conclude, faced with a wealth of possible challenges, we college students should take a positive approach to our life and career. Only by attaining victory over diverse obstacles can we fulfill our dream in the long run.
