With this list, I show you the best places to visit in Patagonia. The climate down there is pretty rough, especially in the very south - if you plan to do hiking or camping, the best time for a trip is between the end of November and the beginning of March. 1. Bariloche, Argentina The fact that Bariloche is well connected (airport, direct bus to and from Buenos Aires) makes it the perfect starting point of a round trip through Patagonia. But more than that: the combination of mountains, lakes and green forests results in its beautiful scenery. 2. Futaleufú, Chile Further down south and a bit harder to access is the small Chilean village Futaleufú which is located at the border to Argentina. The reason which makes it worth it: the Futaleufú River is often referred to as one of the best white water spots for rafting in the world. The landscape along the river is unique and, due to its location, still pretty much untouched. 3. Puerto Rio Tranquilo, Chile If you want to get there quickly, you should travel through Argentina and cross over to Chile Chico as this place is also very remote. The reason to do so: the marble caves in the General Carrera lake. 4. Torres del Paine, Chile Personally the national park Torres del Paine is my number 1 attraction in Patagonia - you should take some time and do a multi-day trek to experience as much of it as possible: glaciers, forests, impressive mountain ranges, lagoons and rivers. 21. What is the best time for hiking in Patagonia? A. December 25—January 15 B. October 1—November 1 C. March 5—April 1 D. November 5—June 7 22. Which of the following about the Futaleufú River is true? A. It lies in an easily accessible village. B. It is ignored due to rafting sports. C. It is the best rafting river in the world. D. It still has untouched landscapes. 23. Which place attracts the author most in Patagonia? A. Bariloche. B. Futaleufú. C. Puerto Rio Tranquilo. D. Torres del Paine. B I like to believe that some things in life never change. A constant, ever since I could hold a pen, has been the routine at lunch with my grandfather. My grandmother will ask me how the walk was from my parents’ house before I take a seat at their kitchen table. Sitting in his usual spot in the corner is my grandfather. He looks up for a quick “hello” before heading back down to the crossword puzzle in front of him. “So, how is this one coming along?” I’ll ask. With a failed laugh, he’ll slide the crossword toward me. Carefully cut and neatly folded from his newspaper, three-quarters of it will already have been finished. Many of the clues(线索)are far too advanced for me to figure out. However, I’m happy to help with the strange clue related to sports ---my expert knowledge --- that still remain. Even if I’m certain of an answer, I fill in the squares with a pencil, as clues are always checked thoroughly by my grandfather. In the rare event that we’re unable to finish the crossword by the end of lunch, he’ll call me later that evening to go over the clues he later solved. Today, lunch unfolds in its usual manner. However, large parts of the puzzle are blanks “Grandfather, I think this is 49-down... and this, 52-across,” I say. “Oh, right. Yes, put that down there,” he replies. I reach across the table to hand him the crossword. Looking at him as he searches for answers, suddenly I feel something different. I note his hair is whiter than I remembered. For the first time I think about my grandfather as, well, a grandfather. But life is about changes we aren’t always prepared for. Just as we are on different ends of life, we find ourselves on different ends of the city now too. But at lunch, when we take up our pens and open the crossword, the world stands pleasantly still. Now, instead of an exercise of quick wit(机智), our crosswords are about patience and understanding. As clues are slowly understood, so are the truths in life. 24. What is the grandfather usually doing when the author visits him? A. He is preparing lunch happily as a routine. B. He is sitting in the comer working at riddles. C. He is concentrating all his efforts on the crossword. D. He is cutting crossword puzzles from newspapers carefully. 25. The phrase “go over” in Paragraph 4 probably means “_______”. A. repeat B. switch C. discover D. provide 26. Which of the following words can best describe the grandfather? A. Quiet and optimistic. B. Humorous and helpful. C. Enthusiastic and careful. D. Independent and funny. 27. What does the author think of the crosswords now? A. They bring his grandparents closer to him. B. They improve his intelligence and patience. C. They encourage him to solve problems in life. D. They help him to understand the truths of life. C Everything you know is in your brain. For what you don’t, you can ask the web. However, as you can imagine, in the past there were no computers and no web at all. Think about people living 3,500 years ago, in places where pyramids towered above them, instead of the modern buildings you can see around you. The lack of explanations about how things worked inspired the ancients to make discoveries and feed their curiosity. But do not think they knew nothing: in fact, we still wonder how the Egyptians could build the pyramids using their own, rather rudimentary equipment. They wrote down their knowledge on books (called papyrus scrolls) so that later people could benefit from their skills. Living safer and healthier was a top priority for the ancients: when they hurt their heads in battles, they used to heal their wounds using the cures, some of which were recorded on a papyrus now known as the Edwin Smith Papyrus. Interestingly, this is the oldest written evidence of the word “brain” we have on Earth, and it dates back to 3,500 years ago! However, writing the word “brain” on a papyrus did not solve all the curiosities and questions about it. Around 2,500 years ago, for example, ancient Greeks wondered whether mind and soul lay in the brain or in the heart. 2000 years ago, Roman physician Galen of Pergamon was sure he had solved the question: it was the brain, not the heart, that was the center of mental life. However, Galen had to convince the people around him that what he had discovered was true. It was not easy, mostly because people held their earlier beliefs. Every neuroscientist, just like Galen did, has to carefully observe reality, focus on something that is really interesting, think about how it can work, perform experiments, and discuss the data they get. This way, they can obtain convincing evidence to be shared with others. 28. What encouraged the ancients to make discoveries? A. The hope for keeping curiosity. B. The need for writing books. C. The search for explanations. D. The wish to work faster. 29. Which word can best replace “rudimentary” underlined in paragraph 2? A. Complicated. B. Primitive. C. Electrical. D. Protective. 30. What can be learned about the Edwin Smith Papyrus? A. It was probably a medical text. B. It was finished 2,500 years ago. C. It was considered useless at first. D. It was written by Galen of Pergamon. 31. How did Galen convince people of his discovery? A. By finding evidence from papyrus scrolls. B. By asking many scientists to support him. C. By following strict scientific methods. D. By teaching people to do experiments. D As of 2020, the world's biggest lithium-ion (锂离子) battery is hooked up to the Southern California power grid and can provide 250 million watts of power, or enough to power about 250,000 homes. But it's actually not the biggest battery in the world: these lakes are. Wait - how can a pair of lakes be a battery? To answer that question, it helps to define a battery: it's simply something that stores energy and releases it on demand. The lithium-ion batteries that power our phones, laptops, and cars are just one type. They store energy in lithium ions. How do the two lakes store and release energy? First, one is 300 meters higher than the other. Electricity power pumps that move billions of liters of water from the lower lake to the higher one. This stores the energy by giving the water extra gravitational potential energy. Then, when there's high demand for electricity, valves (阀门) open, releasing the stored energy by letting water flow downhill to power 6 giant turbines that can generate 3 billion watts of power for 10 hours. Unfortunately, neither of the giant batteries we've talked about so far is big enough to power multiple cities. The two lakes setup requires specific geography, takes up a lot of land, and has high upfront costs to build. The giant lithium-ion battery in California can power about 250,000 homes, yes, but only for an hour. Lithium-ion batteries also require certain heavy metals to make. These resources are limited, and mining them causes environmental damage. Inventors all over the world are rising to the challenge of making batteries that can meet our needs - many of them even weirder than the two lakes. 32. Why is the world's biggest lithium-ion battery mentioned in Paragraph 1? A. To make a comparison. B. To introduce the topic. C. To stress its importance. D. To declare a fact. 33. Which statement is true according to the passage? A. With the help of the pumps, the two lakes store energy. B. The water flow by itself to release the stored energy. C. The two lakes setup is able to power multiple cities. D. Lithium-ion batteries are environmentally friendly. 34. What will most probably be talked about in the following paragraph? A. Inventors' worries. B. Inventors' efforts. C. Stranger batteries. D. New challenges. 35. Which is the best title for the passage? A. Battery Inventors Face New Challenges. B. The World's Biggest Battery Looks Nothing Like a Battery C. Giant Batteries Fail to Meet Our Needs. D. Newly-invented Batteries. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Literature is the body of written works produced by scholars and researchers, who specialize in a given field. Why is literature important? Let’s see. Literary works are descriptions of the thinking patterns and social criteria. They’re a description of the different aspects of common people’s life. ___36___. Moral stories are an aid for parents and teachers to let the kids learn important lessons in life. Aesop, Enid Blyton, and Mark Twain are some of the most widely popular children’s authors. ___38___. True, languages are the building blocks of literature. But the study of literature cannot be restricted to only studying languages. ___39___.
