The Importance of Reading Classics
Classics, ranging from novels, essays, to poems and autobiographies, play an important part in the development of one’s personality and taste. Moreover, they broaden people’s vision and enlarge their knowledge. And by getting access to the great minds, people tend to be encouraged and enlightened, which is likely to make their life more meaningful.
Unfortunately, nowadays fewer people would like to read these master pieces. The reasons can be complicated. To begin with, more and more people are too busy dealing with pressure from their work and daily life to read books. Meanwhile, the advanced media technologies such as cable television, DVD player and the Internet provide people more fun to kill time. The last but not the least, people of these days are paying too much attention to practical knowledge, which to some extent can account for the ignorance of the classics.
As college students, we should not just focus on how to become a good bread earner. We should read as many classics as possible, so that we can be more reasonable and responsible, which helps us be more useful to the society and more successful in our future life.

Should One Expect a Reward When Doing a Good Deed?
Opinions about whether one should expect a reward when doing a good deed very from person to person. Some people maintain that there should be a reward for a good deed. They explain that more people may be encouraged to help the needed if they could be rewarded. Nevertheless, in the absence of proper rewards, those who have done good deeds may sometimes feel disappointed.
However, others hold the opposite view. They believe that more and more people should be encouraged to follow the outstanding example set by Lei Feng, a communist soldier, who “devoted his limited life to the limitless cause of serving the people”. For one thing, it is an indispensable part of Chinese tradition to help the needed regardless of any physical returns. For another, nowadays, our country calls for people to help each other so as to build up a friendly and harmonious society.
Personally, I firmly agree with the latter view, since university students, as pioneers in our society, should take the lead in our society to learn from Lei Feng to help others. Besides, doing good deeds is something that makes you feel happy and rewarding, no matter whether you receive any reward or not.

Will E-books Replace Traditional Books?
Information Technology (IT) exerts universal and inevitable appeal in the world of today. The epoch of IT has given rise to more and more E-books for people to download and browse freely on the computers, creating a fresh and revolutionary alternative to the classical experience of reading.
It is heatedly argued by some people that E-books will replace traditional books for the following factors: To begin with, E-books will contribute to environment protection in that more papers and forest resources may be saved with the popularity of this digital miracle. Besides, compared with the cost of traditional books, E-books lend to be favored for their relatively low and economical prices, which may be one of their important advantages. Finally, E-books will he more attractive and accessible to the young people who are accustomed to computer uses and Internet surfing.
In my opinion, fashionable and feasible as they are, E-books may not take the place of traditional ones since not everybody in the world has access to these IT-based products. What's more, as a book lover, I still prefer to take great pleasure in thumbing through my paper versions and enjoy the luxury smell of the newly printed books.

How to improve student's mental health?
Students’ mental health has been playing an increasingly important role in our day-to-day life. Indeed, it is widely accepted that it has gained growing popularity among persons in all walks of life. There is a general discussion today about the issue of disorder in brains.
Obviously, it is necessary that effective actions should be taken to prevent mental problems. Authorities in universities play a critical role in the situation. To begin with, schools, such as colleges or universities, can provide chances for the young men to ease their attention. What's more, some are physically strong, but psychological bring potential threats. Teachers may have a chance to find them in advance. Besides, specialists in this field are to be required to make full preparation for cases in time. Facing the crisis, experts can deal with it in a professional way, which means they have more or better opportunities to save us than others.
From the factors mentioned above, we may safely draw the conclusion that we can free ourselves from mental illness by taking certain precautions. For example, if you have pains or puzzles in mind, finding a friend to express these is a good way to release pressure. Certainly, that further attention will be paid to the issue.

Should Parents Send Their Kids to Art Classes?
It has become a prevailing trend for parents to send their children to art classes of all kinds. To this phenomenon, some people hold the positive view. They claim that attending art classes can help nurture children’s interest and tap their potentials in such art as painting, music and dancing. This, they believe, will contribute to children’s all-round development.
Others, however, hold the opposite view. They argue that not all children are interested or talented in art, or a child may not be fond of all forms of art. Forcing these children to art classes will burden the children already buried in the piles of school work. Worse still, it deprives them of right and chance to discover their hidden talents.
Personally, I believe that art education benefits children, that going to art classes is an effective means to find out and give full play to children’s talent in art and it is conducive to their sound development. But before deciding what kind of art class to send their children to, parents should take the kids’ interests and will into consideration. After all, as the saying goes, the fittest is the best.

Due Attention Should Be Given to the Study of Chinese
There has been a worrying phenomenon these years that quite a few students neglect the study of Chinese. Many students are learning foreign languages, especially English, with great zeal. The study of our native language Chinese, on the contrary, is ignored and left out in the cold.
For various reasons, the study of Chinese is now becoming a neglected art, but perhaps the most realistic one is that (4)a good command of a foreign language tends to land graduates a good job — while with some exceptions, Chinese skills seem to be of little use in the job hunting. Apart from that, nowadays fewer and fewer universities stimulate Chinese study. No matter what reason, if the phenomenon is not stopped, Chinese will become marginalized. Consequently, the status of Chinese as an embodiment of and the basis of the 5,000-year-old Chinese culture will be shaken.
To change this situation, two things need to be done. First, it is very necessary that individuals give up viewing Chinese merely from a prospective of utility. Chinese is our mother tongue and no doubt it is one indispensable part of Chinese culture and the Chinese race. Second, colleges and universities should promote Chinese language study and research.

My View on University Ranking
In recent years, it is very popular to rank universities. University ranking lists based on a variety of criteria can be found on some educational websites, or newspapers. These lists have great influence on students and many families have come to rely on these lists to make their college-choice decisions.
To this phenomenon, people’s opinions vary. Some are in favor of university ranking, holding that the results of the ranking are helpful for high school students and their parents to choose which school to apply for. Some people, however, believe that many lists lack specificity. Rankings are only numbers. They do not tell you anything about the distinct nature of the school; you do not find any information about the campus life, the type of extra-curricular activities on offer and the nature of sports programs that are available for the students.
As far as I’m concerned, we should not over-stress the university ranking. It should be remembered that rankings can play a big role in the selection of a college but it should not be the only criterion. Many factors including your own perception of the college should matter in your final choice.

Certificate Craze
Just randomly ask a student on campus or a young man on the street what he is busy with, and quite possibly, you may get the answer that he is preparing for a certificate of some kind. Asking more people, you will find that getting a certificate has become a craze, especially among today’s job-seeking youth.
People have different purposes in becoming certified. More and more people, especially students, look at obtaining certificates as a means of getting a better job and, therefore, enjoying a brighter future. Some others spare no effort to get certificates for the sole purpose of proving that they are qualified in a certain field. Still, there are those who just want to enrich their life by preparing for certificates because they really enjoy the progress.
I myself have obtained two different certificates: one in computer and another in English translation. Both of these certificates have been beneficial in getting good jobs. Therefore, it is my opinion that, trend or not, the result of becoming certified is real invaluable in opening up future opportunities.

The Way to Success
There are many ways to success, such as a strong will, a passionate heart or good preparations. From his famous remark, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” we can see that for Abraham Lincoln, the way to success is to make full preparations.
I am firmly supportive of Abraham Lincoln’s view that good preparations lead to success. Success never comes to us accidentally, but as a result of careful planning and preparing. Having set our goal, we have a clear idea about how to fulfill it. Without elaborate preparations, many of our efforts would be random and we would most probably end up in failure.
Examples that adequate preparations help people succeed can be found everywhere. Workers who spend days learning the technique of operating machines beforehand can produce qualified goods in a quicker way. Interviewees researching thoroughly the company and the specific job before the interviews are more likely to pass the interview and get the offer.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled The Impact of the Internet on Interpersonal Communication. Your essay should start with a brief description of the picture. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.
The Impact of the Internet on Interpersonal Communication
As is shown in the picture, the father asks his daughter how her school was today; instead of answering him directly, the daughter tells her father to read her blog. This little story seems somewhat funny, but it reflects a typical way of interpersonal communication in modern society, that is, via the Internet. Obviously, the development of the Internet has made a great impact on interpersonal communication.
On the one hand, the Internet provides more convenient and interesting ways of communication, including blogs, emails, instant messengers like QQ and MSN, which are increasingly welcomed. For example, in many schools, teachers send and receive students’ homework by the Internet; in many companies, colleagues communicate with each other by sending instant messages or holding video conferences.
On the other hand, the Internet brings some negative impacts on interpersonal communication. More people complain having lost face-to-face communicating skills. Some people even become indifferent to each other in real life.
From the above-mentioned, we can safely conclude that the Internet is a double-edged sword for interpersonal communication. We should take full advantage of the convenience it brings, and meanwhile avoid being immerged in it too much.
