All restrictions on such small cars must be lifted before the end of March of 2008, it said. The notice also said that active increase of small car use would help build an energy-efficient society. "It will help alleviate energy shortages and protect the environment, as well as foster brands in China's automotive industry," the notice said. The notice called on manufacturers to invest more in development and production of environmentally-friendly and low-emission engines and automobiles, such as small cars, diesel-powered vehicles and those using new fuel sources. The notice urged government departments to use tax breaks and preferential oil-pricing policies to encourage consumers to buy such cars. Industry sources said regulators are creating a new auto consumption tax scheme, which will slash taxes on low-emission vehicles while raising charges on high-emission vehicles. For example, consumption taxes on less-than-1.0-litre vehicles will be lowered to 1 per cent from 3 per cent. In contrast, the taxes on larger-than-3.0-litre automobiles are likely to rise to 14-20 per cent from 8 per cent. The government notice advocated lower parking charges for small vehicles. Statistics from the auto association showed that the proportion of less-than-1.6-litre car sales among domestically-made passenger vehicles grew to 66.1 per cent in the first 11 months of last year, from 62.5 per cent in 2004. Sales of made-in-China passenger vehicles totaled 3.51 million units during the period, up 19.48 per cent. Most domestic brands compete in the low-emission segment. These include Chery, Geely, Xiali, Chang'an and Hafei. "We expect to perform much better than before thanks to the new policy. We will launch more low-exhaust-emission models," Qing Lihong, a sales manager of Chery Automobile Co, said yesterday in a television interview. The notice also called on government departments to take the lead in using environmentally friendly vehicles. Automobiles guzzle the bulk of China's petrol, and the country has been the world's second biggest oil consumer after the United States since 2002. According to industry statistics, more than three-fifths of China's total petrol output and one-fifth of its diesel output are used by vehicles at present. China's annual crude oil imports are forecast to grow to 190 million by 2010 from 123 million tons in 2004. (China Daily) 41. In the third paragraph , "alleviate" refers to . A. lessen B. improve C. increase D. restrict 42. The passage implies that larger-than-3.0-litre automobiles are . A. low-emission vehicles B. middle-emission vehicles C. high-emission vehicles D. dangerous 43. According to the passage, government departments may sometimes be blamed for . A. doing something against the law B. performing much better than before because of the new policy C. using tax breaks and preferential oil-pricing policies D. not playing their roles as taking the lead in using environmentally friendly vehicles 44. What would be the best title for the passage ? A. How to protect the environment and foster brands in China's automotive industry B. Green light given to smaller, eco-friendly vehicles C. A notice for consumers D. Lower parking charges for small vehicles B How can you find out what is going on inside a person's body without opening the patient up? Regular X-ray can show a lot. CAT scans can show even more. They can give a three-dimensional (三维的) view of body organs . What is CAT scan? CAT stands for Computerized Axial Topography (层面X线照相术). It is a special X-ray machine that obtains a 360 degree picture of a small area of a patient's body. Doctors use X-rays to study and diagnose (discover the nature of) diseases and injuries within the body. X-rays can learn the position of foreign objects inside the body or take pictures of some inside organs---if special liquids are added to the organs to be X-rayed. A CAT scanner, however, uses a light of X-rays to give a cross-sectional (横断面的) view of a specific part of the body. A fine light of X-rays is scanned across the body and turned around the patient from many different positions. A computer collects the information from each position and produces a clear cross-sectional image on a screen. This image is then photographed for later use. Several cross-sections, taken one after another, can give clear "photo" of the entire body organs. The newest CAT scanners can even give clear pictures of active, moving organs, just as a fast action camera can "stop the action", giving clear pictures of what appears unclear to the eye. And because of the 360-degree pictures, CAT scans show 3 dimensional views of organs in a manner that was only made known during an operation or an examination a dead patient. Too much X-ray can cause skin burns, cancer or other damage to the body. Yet CAT scans actually don't expose the patient to more radiation than regular X-rays do. CAT scans can also be done without injecting liquids into the patient so they are less risky than regular X-ray procedures. CAT scans provide accurate, detailed information. They can find such a thing as bleeding inside the brain. They are helping to save lives. 45. What is NOT true of a CAT scan? A. It makes use of computer techniques. B. It gives clear images of active, moving body parts. C. It can stop the action of an organ for some time. D. It is safer than regular X-ray procedures. 46. What is special about the latest CAT scanners? A. It helps to find out what is going on inside a person's body without opening it up. B. It provides clear photos of moving organs. C. It won't cause serious skin burns, cancer or other damage to the body. D. It can take 3-dimensional pictures of inside organs. 47. It is implied but not directly stated in the passage that ____. A.CAT scanners can take photos of either the whole body or one part of it B.CAT scanners do not need the injection of liquids C.CAT scanners are more expensive than regular X-ray procedures D. the patient can be exposed to a slight amount of radiation safely 48.
