Callieˈs Gift
Callie opened a letter she got in the mail. It was an invitation (邀请) from the parents of her friend Michael. They were giving him a surprise birthday party in an expensive hotel. Callie wanted to get Michael the perfect gift. At first, her plan was to make him a bookmark (书签) because they both loved reading. But that wouldnˈt work anymore. Clearly, a fancy (奢华的) party called for a fancy gift.
One day in class, she saw Michael checking the time. She came up with an idea. A watch! There were lots of expensive watches in the store. It would be the perfect gift.
Callie went to a store to buy one. She saved some money from her part-time job and it was just enough to buy the watch. Even though it was expensive, she was relieved (松了一口气) because she had gotten the perfect gift.
The night of the party, Callie heard about all the gifts everyone prepared for Michael. Richard got Michael a toy gun, the kind they had played with as kids. Molly made Michael a big card. And Jasmine baked a box of Michaelˈs favorite biscuits.
Callie could picture Michaelˈs warm smile as he saw the toy gun, the card, and the biscuits. Then she pictured the confused (困惑的) look on his face when he saw the expensive watch. Callie thought of the price of the watch, and she blushed (脸红). Callie was lost in thought for a moment. Finally, she decided to go with her first plan: a handmade bookmark. She secretly put the watch in her handbag. Luckily, she still had the receipt (购物小票). Her gift would be late, but at least it would be special.
