The Million Pound Bank Note
This is a famous novel based on a genuine story,whose author is Mark Twain, who was brought up in his birth place -America and loved adventures.
Henry, an American businessman landed in London by accident.About a month ago, he took a chance to go home on his boat. While sailing out of the bay, he met a strong wind and was carried out to sea, later,he was spotted by a ship. By working as a barber on the ship, he earned his passage and came to London. He went to the American embassy to seek help, but they didn’t permit him in. The impatient ambassador started at him and refused to help him. Perhaps, it was his appearance in rags that accounted for their rude manners.
Henry was wandering on the pavement feeling helpless when two old and wealthy brothers invited him to enter their house. They gave him an envelope with a big note in it ,Henry didn’t open it, but indeed, that was an amount of money. After thanking the two men, he left with the envelope. He came to a restaurant, where he ordered a nice big steak and a pineapple dessert, However, he was treated coldly. When Henry took out the million pound bank note from the envelope,both the waiter and the owner were shocked and screamed, feeling unbelievable. Immediately, they bowed and apologized to Henry and even told Henry that“having you here is a great honour!As for the bill,Sir,please forget it.”
