Flying kites is an activity loved by many Chinese in spring. It has been around for more than 2,300 years. It was first invented by Mozi, he spent three years in making a “bird” out of wood and flying it for a day before it fell down. His student Lu Ban replaced the wood with bamboo, and the “bamboo bird” was able to fly as long as three days.
It was not until the Tang Dynasty that the kite was used for fun. Because of the popularity of paper, common people were able to make kites with paper instead of expensive silk, and the kite were in different styles, making methods and decorations (装饰). Little lanterns are tied to the kite. And when the kites are flying in the sky, the lanterns look like stars at night.
The skeleton (骨架) of the kite is usually made of bamboo. The process of tying the skeleton includes choosing bamboo, cutting bamboo, bending bamboo strips (弯曲竹条) and making strips together. Then, you have to choose which material is put on the skeleton as cover. Silk and paper can be often seen as the cover. Painting, the third step, makes your kite come alive and beautiful.

When you go on the street, in the neighborhood and almost everywhere, you can always see four bins of different colors. It’s what China is carrying out (实施) — waste sorting (分类).
At present, waste in our life can mainly be divided into four kinds: recyclable waste, kitchen waste, harmful waste and other waste. Different kinds of waste should be put into different bins. Recyclable waste must be thrown into the blue bin. Kitchen waste should be collected in the green bin. Harmful waste should be in the red one and the grey one is for other waste.
Do you know what recyclable waste means? It’s the material that can be recycled or reused, including paper, plastics, glass, metals and so on. The kitchen waste includes vegetable leaves, peel, bone and others. Harmful waste is bad for people’s health and the environment. It needs to be carefully dealt with. Some may be buried and some may be burned.
There are many advantages of waste sorting. It helps to turn the waste into useful things. Chinese people, old and young, are learning environmental protection. It just hadn’t been a very good week. On Tuesday, Sam’s father lost his job. Then on Wednesday, Sam’s mother announced that the rent on their apartment was going up. Now it was Friday, and Sam had just opened his e-mail to find an invitation from Rosa to her birthday party.
An invitation to a party at Rosa’s would have been good news. Sam knew Rosa from Adventure Club. Members of the club took trips to places such as the Museum of Natural History.
Sam knew that he would enjoy Rosa’s party, but he didn’t want to go without a gift. What could he possibly buy her with the little bit of money he had left in his pocket? Sam knew he couldn’t ask Mom or Dad for any money—not this week! “Well,” Sam thought, “I don’t have time to worry about this right now. I’ve got a report to write for school, and I’d better get to the library before it closes.”
Later that afternoon, as Sam was leaving the library, he noticed a sign that said there was a book sale going on downstairs. Sam headed down for a quick look, and two books caught his eye. The first was a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods, and the second was a book about women explorers. “Rosa would like these,” Sam thought, “but would it be tacky to give her used books for her birthday?”
Sam decided that a used gift was better than no gift at all. Besides, Rosa supported recycling in a big way, so probably she would not mind. With his last dollar, Sam bought the books and went home feeling a little better.
The party on Saturday was a lot of fun. Everyone told stories about the funny things they had done in Adventure Club—like the time they went hiking in a nearby park and fell into the lake. Rosa’s mother and grandmother served them delicious food and creamy coconut milkshakes. Rosa opened all her gifts and thanked everyone for the nice things they had given her. She stopped for a moment when she opened Sam’s gift, which made him wonder if she liked the books, but nothing was said. The moment passed, and soon the party was over.
When Sam got home, he opened his e-mail to find this note from Rosa:
Dear Sam, Of all the gifts I received today, yours was the nicest. How did you know I would love a book about women explorers and a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods? Now I have something to read that will inspire me to follow my dream of becoming an adventurer, and I have a book that I can share with my grandmother. Love,
Rosa

Have you ever seen chicks being born? Recently, our biology teacher asked us to do a chick-hatching (孵化) project.
We got some eggs and carefully put them in an incubator (孵化器). It keeps the temperature at 37.8 degrees. All we had to do then was to wait for the chicks’ birth.
I couldn’t help smiling when I saw the birth of two baby chicks. We thought the weather outside was warm enough, so we put them in a box outside. We used a blanket to keep them warm. But the weather got colder at midnight and the worst things happened, they both died.
All of us cried when we saw this. Our biology teacher said, “Life is fragile. We should value the chance to live.”
A few days later, another two chicks came out. One is yellow and the other is black. They are cute and beautiful. A few hours after they were born, their coats were dry. We took better care of them this time, feeding them with breadcrumbs (面包屑).
