Why does the sky change colors?
What is the sky? How high is it? What color is it? What birds can live above it? These
questions are difficult to answer, aren't they?
In fact, the sky has no color. Then why does the sky look blue?
We know that there is air around the world. When planes fly, they need air to lift their
wings. Planes can't fly very high. That is because the air gets thinner when they go higher.
The same will happen to us if we go high enough. If we go up about 1,200 kilometers from
the earth, we'll find no air there. Some birds can fly into the sky as high as a plane, but they
cannot fly or live without air.
Looking up above us, you will see the blue sky with white clouds. It is usually light
blue. The color would be bluer when you see on the top of a high mountain. And you will
see fewer clouds in the sky between you and the sun.
Sometimes the sky doesn't look blue. When the sun rises and falls, you will see red,
orange, and other colors in the sky. Such are the most beautiful moments of the day.
Who can see the colors of the sky high above the earth? The astronauts! They can see
those beautiful colors of the sky from the outer space. However, before flying into outer
space, they sit in a spaceship high above the earth, and there is no air at all. The sky would
be that dark and its color would be black.
Now you may understand that we see colors because the air scatters(使散射)the
sunlight. Light travels through the air. Without air. there would be no light or colors.
34. Planes can't fly as high as possible because______.
A. the sky is blue B. the wings are heavier
C. the sky has no color D. the air becomes thinner
35. When you stand on the top of a high mountain, you will see______.
A. more air B. bluer skies

Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history? Many people would say: Confucius(孔子). September 28 is his birthday. He was born over 2,000 years ago, but people still remember him on this day.
Confucius lived in the kingdom of Lu, part of today's Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. His childhood was sad. His father died when he was only 3 and he had to work to help his mother. But young Confucius didn't give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time only children from rich families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.
Today. people still follow Confucius' lessons. He told us that everyone has something worthy to learn and to teach. "When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in some areas. I select their good qualities and follow them. I take their bad qualities and change them in myself.” He also taught us, "All study but no thinking makes people puzzled(困惑的). All thinking but no study makes people lazy.”

"A wise old owl sat on an oak. The more he saw, the less he spoke, the more he heard.
Why aren't we like that wise old bird?-一Edward H. Richards.
We all need to learn to listen well. Listening is a learned skill, the same as speaking in public.
It just takes much longer to learn! Listening is a skill we should be practicing every day. And I mean active listening, not just listening when it is convenient to us.
Listening shows others that they are important. It's a sign of respect(尊重). If someone listens to you carefully when you are talking, it shows that they are really interested in what you are saying.
How do you practice listening? Here are some basic rules,
Put down whatever is in your hands. Are you in the middle of writing something? Put down the pen and fold your hands. Are you reading something? Close it so that it will be impossible for you to look down and start reading again. Then put it down.
Turn off your computer. The computer will distract you from your job at hand一listening.
Face the person you are speaking with. Facing the person you are speaking with will help you focus completely on listening. It will also make the person feel that you find what he is saying important.
Mind your body language. Leaning into the speaker will show interest. Crossing your arms in front of your chest shows disagreement. Looking around the room shows you have no interest. Tapping your fingers tells the speaker that you are really too busy for him. Looking at that speaker in the eye tells him that he is important.
Listen completely. Do not start making comments after the first few words. Do not start thinking about your reply in your mind. Pay attention to the speaker. Really listen to what he is telling you.
