Diogenes was a famous Greek philosopher of the fourth century B.C.,who established the philosophy of cynicism. He often walked about in the daytime holding alighted lantern, peering around as 计 he were looking for something,When questioned about his odd behavior he would reply, "IT am searching for an honcst man.”Diogenes held that the good man was self-sufficient and did not require material comforts or wealth, He believed that wealth and possessions constrained humanitys natural state of freedom. In keeping with his philosophy he was perfectly satisfied with making his home in a large tub discarded from the temple of Cybele, the goddess of nature This earthen tub, called a pithos, and formerly been used for holding wine or oil for the sacrifices at the temple. One day Alexander the Great conqueror of half the civilized world, saw Diogenes sitting in this tub in the sunshine. So the king, surrounded by his countries, approached Diogenes and said,"T am Alexander the Great "The philosopher replied rather contemptuously, "Tam Diogenes, the Cynic." Alexander then asked him if he could help him in any way.” Yes,”shot back Diogenes,"don't stand between me and the sun.”A surprised Alexander then replied quickly "ITIwere notAlexander Twould be Diogenes, Genius at Work 天才在工作 Henry Ford didn't always pay attention in school One day he and a friend took a watch apart angry and upset the teacher told him both to stay after school, Their Punishment was to stay until they had fixed the watch. But the teacher did not know young Ford's genius. In ten minutes, this mechanical wizard had repaired the watch and was on this way home, Ford was always interested in how things worked. He once plugged up the spout of ateapot and placed it on the fire. Then he waited to see what would happen. The water boiled and, of course, mumed to steam. Since the steam had no way to escape, he teapot exploded. The explosion cracked a mirror and broke a window, the young inventor was badly scalded Ford's year of curiosity and tinkering paid off He dreamed of a horseless carriage. When he built one, the world of tansportation was changed forever 亨利. The God in Youth: Michael Jordan There were already signs thar he had a good deal of talent Harvest Smith aclassmate and close ffiend who in those days played basketball with him practically every day, thought he was the best player on their ninth-grade team 一 he was small but he was every quick "You'd see him geta shot of and you'd wonder how he did it because he wasmrtthat bit” Smith said, “but it was the quickness. The only question was how big he was goingtobe 一and how farup he would take his skilllevel' The summer after ninth grade,Jordan and Smith both went to Pop Herrings basketball camp, Neither of them had yet come into his body and almost all of he Varsity players, two and sometimes three years older seemed infinitely stronger at that moment when a year or two in physical development can make all the difference, 和 Smiths mind there was no doubt of which the two of them was the better player一it was Michael by far But on the day the varsity cuts were announced 一 was the big day of the year for they had all known for weeks when the list would be posted 一 he and Roy Smith had gone to the Laney gym. Smith's name was on 让 Michacls was not Tt was the worst day of Jordan's young life The list was alphabetical, so he focused on where the Js should be, and it wasnrt there, and he kept reading and rereading the Tist hoping somehow that he had missed it or that the alphabetical listing had been done incorrectly That day he went home by himself and went to his room and cried Smith understood what was happening 一 Michael, he knew never wanted you to see him when he was hurt. We Knew Michael was good" Fred Lynch, the Laney assistant coach, said later “but we wanted him to play more and we thought the jayvee was better for him" He easily became the best player on the jayvee that year He simply dominated the play and he diditnot by size bat with quickness. There were games in which he would score forty Points He was so good, in fact that the jayvee games became quite popular The entire varsity began to come early so they could watch him play in the jayvee
