What worries Iceland? A world without ice. Glaciers cover more than 10% of Iceland's surface area. As the Arctic experiences some of the fastest temperature increases on the planet, the entire country is grappling with the issue of climate change. Efforts are being made in various sectors to confront the prospect of a future without ice. Energy producers are upgrading hydroelectric power plants and exploring options like carbon capture and storage to reduce emissions. The fishing industry is also making efforts to use energy-efficient ships and lower fossil fuel consumption. The government has allocated $55 million over the next five years towards reforestation, land conservation, and sustainable transportation projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. More funds will be spent by 2040 when Iceland anticipates carbon removal to balance out emissions from businesses, organizations, and individuals. Iceland's President, Gudni Jóhannesson, acknowledges that climate change is a serious issue that needs practical solutions. He insists that Iceland can do better in terms of taking responsibility for its carbon footprint. Although larger countries like Norway and Finland have made greater reductions in their emissions, Iceland is doing what it can to turn climate change into an economic opportunity while attempting to mitigate its effects. With the impact of climate change in Iceland being more visible than in other nations, they strive to face the issue head-on. “We should focus on finding practical solutions instead of succumbing to despair,” Jóhannesson stated. 未来的 hydroelectric power plants [ˌhaɪdroʊɪˈlɛktrɪk ˈpaʊər plænts] phrase. 水力发电厂 carbon capture and storage [ˈkɑrbən ˈkæptʃər ænd ˈstɔrɪdʒ] phrase. 渔业 energy-efficient ships [ˈɛnərdʒi-ɪˈfɪʃənt ʃɪps] phrase. 土地保护 sustainable transportation projects [səsˈteɪnəbl ˌtrænspərˈteɪʃən ˈprɑdʒɛkts] phrase. 可持续交通项目 greenhouse gas emissions [ˈɡrinhaʊs ɡæs ɪˈmɪʃənz] phrase. 温室气体排放 carbon removal [ˈkɑrbən rɪˈmuːvəl] phrase. 碳去除,碳减排 emissions from businesses [ɪˈmɪʃənz frɑm ˈbɪznəsəz] phrase. 减少,缩减 economic opportunity [ˌikəˈnɑmɪk ˌɑpərˈtuːnəti] phrase. 明显的,可见的 face the issue head-on [feɪs ði ˈɪʃu hɛd-ɑn] phrase. 找到实际解决方案,寻找实用性解决方案 succumbing to despair [səˈkʌmɪŋ tu dɪsˈpɛr] phrase. 碳去除,碳减排 emissions from businesses [ɪˈmɪʃənz frɑm ˈbɪznəsəz] phrase.
