A Faraway Solar System Is an Uncanny Reflection of Our Own
Astronomers have found a way to detect planets that might be orbiting nearby stars by blocking out the bright light from the star. They can then detect heat being radiated by planets, making it easier to spot them as glowing orbs in the darkness. Recently, astronomers successfully captured two exoplanets orbiting a sun-like star about 300 light-years away, marking the first time anyone has captured such an image. While this other solar system looks cozy, the planets are a few hundred times farther from their star than Saturn and Jupiter are from our own sun. The planetary system might include rocky planets like Earth, but they would be too small for even the most powerful telescopes to spot.
This discovery is significant because luminous stars create an obstacle to detecting planets around them, which is why scientists use special instruments to block out the light coming from these celestial bodies. With the help of this technology, astronomers can detect heat radiating off of planets and locate them more easily.
The photograph of the exoplanets orbiting a sun-like star prompts the viewer to imagine what life might be like in that system. While this other world is not identical to Earth, the landscape seems somehow familiar, providing perspective on our place in the universe. It is essential to continue exploring and discovering systems beyond our own to further our understanding of the cosmos and our place within it.

1. According to the article, what makes it difficult for scientists to detect planets orbiting nearby stars?
A. The distance between planets and their star.
B. The brightness of the star.
C. The size of the planets.
D. The technology used in telescopes.
The planetary system might include rocky planets like Earth, but they would be too small for even the most powerful telescopes to spot." 可以判断出选择项C是错误的,接着,文中明确提到:“luminous stars create an obstacle to detecting planets around them”,因此选项B正确。
2. What did the astronomers do to detect heat radiating off planets?
A. They used a special device to block out light from the planet.
B. They used a telescope to observe glowing orbs in the darkness.
C. They captured photographs of planets orbiting sun-like stars.
D. They measured the radiation from planets that were too small to see.
Astronomers have found a way to detect planets... by blocking out the bright light from the star. They can then detect heat being radiated by planets..."
3. Why is the discovery significant according to the article?
A. It provides perspective on humanity's place in the universe.
B. It allows us to detect heat radiating off of planets.
C. It helps identify terrestrial planets in other solar systems.
D. It gives insight into how life might exist beyond Earth.
4. According to the article, why is it important to continue exploring and discovering systems beyond our own?
A. To discover other planets similar to Earth
B. To gain perspective on humanity's place in the universe.
C. To find new homes for humans as Earth becomes uninhabitable.
D. To study the behavior of stars in other solar systems.
5. What did the recent discovery of two exoplanets show according to the article?
A. They were orbiting a sun-like star.
B. They were too small to be seen with telescopes.
C. They were closer to their star than Jupiter and Saturn are to the sun.
D. They could potentially be home to extraterrestrial life.
答案:A。 While this other solar system looks cozy, the planets are a few hundred times farther from their star than Saturn and Jupiter are from our own sun.",“这个行星系统可能包括像地球一样的岩石行星,但在现有大型望远镜下太小而无法探测。”。
6. What is the purpose of blocking out bright light from a star when searching for planets?
A. To make it easier to spot heat radiating off nearby planets.
B. To prevent damage to telescopes from solar flares.
C. To observe and study the sun's surface more closely.
D. To identify gas giants like Jupiter in other solar systems.
