——改编自When the Court of Public Opinion Begins to Favor Women
【文章】
The Me Too movement has brought to light the issue of sexual misconduct and harassment that women have been facing for years. However, the movement also highlighted that men who had engaged in such behavior faced little to no consequences. A woman’s reputation could be easily tarnished by a cruel rumor or photo, which could neutralize her accomplishments and grievances.
The court of public opinion has never been friendly towards women, particularly when it comes to weighing their talent against their personal transgressions. However, things are changing as more and more people are willing to denounce abusive behavior from professional competence. Men are now worried that mere allegations of sexual misconduct could shatter their careers and reputations.
Certain people around those men, especially executives, artists, and politicians, suffered due to their open secrets of being bullies or harassers. There are instances where standing up made it hard for women to rise in their field. The effects on women can be devastating, as seen in cases like Hollywood manager Jill Messick, who committed suicide because of the accusations leveled at her former client Harvey Weinstein.
The rules are changing, which is why men are starting to get unnerved. It is understandable for them to worry that they won’t be believed. However, the fact that powerful men are no longer shielded from their own misconduct is a significant step forward. Women know all too well that there can be permanent stains and consequences associated with speaking out against accused perpetrators. Hence, the fight to speak up and stop abuse must continue.
