——改编自AI makes plagiarism harder to detect, argue academics – in paper written by chatbot
【文章】
Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has reached new heights in recent years, with AI tools now capable of performing a wide range of tasks, including writing. However, this has raised concerns for universities, which are seeking to tackle academic cheating facilitated by these advanced technologies.
A recent paper written and published through the use of an AI model known as ChatGPT highlighted the issue of "chatting and cheating". Debby Cotton, a professor and pretend lead author of the paper said: "This is an arms race…It's going to be difficult for universities to outrun it."
Many institutions are concerned about detecting students who cheat using AI-assisted essay-writing software, and expelling them from their academic programs. According to Thomas Lancaster, a computer scientist at Imperial College London, many universities are "panicking" over the issue.
One of the main challenges for universities is determining whether a paper has been written by a machine or not since AI can produce writing that matches or exceeds that of a human. Furthermore, the latest version of the AI model can sometimes write in a way that appears more natural to humans, making it even more challenging.
Despite these challenges, academics can still look for clues that a person wrote the work, such as incorrect academic referencing where "suspect" references may appear. Clues such as these that differentiate between human writing and machine writing can help identify detected cheating.
To combat this problem, Irene Glendinning of Coventry University suggested redoubling their efforts by reminding students of the consequences associated with cheating, including the potential expulsion from their degrees, and additional training on how to use AI tools correctly.
Overall, the growth of AI technology presents both benefits and challenges in academia. While AI-powered writing tools have the potential to make writing more efficient, institutions must ensure that they take appropriate measures that prevent cheating and uphold the integrity of academic standards.
